Historic pub in Colchester

"The Playhouse - JD Wetherspoon" in Colchester, England, is a remarkable pub and restaurant that belongs to the well-known J.D. Wetherspoon chain, distinguished by its unique history and architecture. It is located in a former theater building, which opened as the Playhouse in 1929, was converted into a cinema in the early 1930s, and later, after a stint as a bingo hall in the 1980s, was revived as a Wetherspoon pub in 1994. This historic setting gives the establishment a special character that sets it apart from other pubs in the chain, making it a popular meeting place for locals and visitors alike who seek a blend of tradition and casual enjoyment.

Wetherspoon restaurant with history

The atmosphere at "The Playhouse" is lively and inviting, characterized by the preserved theater architecture. The large, open space is dominated by the original stage and the balcony, where life-sized cardboard cutouts of famous personalities stand—a quirky detail that often serves as a topic of conversation. The furnishings are typical of Wetherspoon: functional, with a long bar in the center and numerous seating options ranging from cozy nooks to large tables. Notably, there is a sunken seating area on the sides and an open space in the former audience area that creates a relaxed, sociable vibe. The staff is often described as friendly, although service can sometimes be a bit slow during busy times.

British pub dishes in Colchester

Culinary-wise, "The Playhouse" offers the classic Wetherspoon experience with a wide range of British pub dishes and international influences. A highlight is the "Fish and Chips," a traditional dish featuring crispy fried fish and thick chips, appreciated for its generous portion and authentic taste. Also popular is the "Gourmet Burger," served with juicy meat and refined toppings, bringing a modern twist to the menu. For vegetarians, options such as the "Five Bean Chilli," a spicy bean mix served with rice or nachos, provide a tasty alternative. Breakfast options include the "Traditional Breakfast," featuring sausages, bacon, and scrambled eggs—a hearty start to the day available until noon.

Inviting atmosphere at Playhouse

The drinks menu is another attraction, boasting an impressive selection of real ales and craft beers that change regularly, offering beer enthusiasts a variety of choices. Local ales are particularly highlighted, while freshly ground Lavazza coffees are a popular choice for those seeking a break from alcohol. "The Playhouse" is also known for its generous portions and consistent quality, making it a reliable spot for a meal, even though food may occasionally be criticized as lukewarm during peak times.

Went today......ordered large mixed grill and when asked where the fried egg was, was simply told 'we've run out'...no replacement offered and wasn't told prior to the food arriving. Food was not warm in the slightest and meat overcooked and burnt. Won't return and find the Clacton and Dovercourt ones far better.

Love this pub: friendly, caring staff; tables constantly cleaned; food as good as any fast food can be; recommend the Full English Breakfast, the Large Mixed Grill, and the Chicken Tikka Masala… all with the discounted drink; unbeatable value for money. Wetherspoon app works really well (unless you bought a rubbish mobile) and always had a swift response to the Wetherspoon app… no complaints with food, drinks or service… so 5 out of 5 stars!

The food may have come out a little cold and the portions were a little stingy but the staff were superb and the atmosphere was great!
